๐ข Step-by-Step: Update DualSense Firmware on PC
Check Battery Level First
Before anything else, check that your DualSense battery is at least 50% charged. Connect via USB-C and wait a few minutes if needed. A firmware update requires sustained power โ low battery mid-update = bricked controller.
โ ๏ธ Minimum 50% battery required before proceeding.
Download PlayStation Controller Firmware Updater
Visit the official Sony page: controller.dl.playstation.net/controller/lang/en/fwupdater.html โ Click the Windows download button. File size is approximately 10 MB. This is the official Sony tool โ no third-party software needed.
๐ก No PlayStation account required. The tool is completely free.
Install and Launch the Updater
Run the downloaded installer. Installation takes about 1 minute. After installation, launch "PlayStation Controller Firmware Updater" from your Start menu or desktop shortcut.
Connect DualSense via USB-C
Plug your DualSense into your PC using a data-capable USB-C cable. The updater will automatically detect the connected controller and display its current firmware version.
๐ก Use the original Sony USB-C cable for guaranteed data transfer compatibility.
Run the Firmware Update
If the updater shows a firmware update is available, click the Update button. A progress bar will appear. The process takes approximately 2 minutes. The DualSense light bar will pulse during the update. When complete, the updater shows a success message with the new firmware version.
โ ๏ธ Do NOT close the application, disconnect the cable, or let the PC sleep during this step.
Return to DualShock Calibration GUI
Disconnect and reconnect your DualSense. Navigate to the calibration tool page. Click Connect and select your controller. Error 1 should now be resolved and the tool will display the controller info panel normally.
๐ก Close Steam if it is open โ Steam will block the WebHID connection needed by the calibration tool.
๐ฎ Alternative: Update via Steam
Windows 10/11 users with Steam installed may receive an automatic firmware update prompt when connecting DualSense. If Steam displays a notification about a controller firmware update:
- Keep DualSense connected via USB-C throughout
- Click the update prompt in Steam
- Wait approximately 2 minutes for completion
- Once confirmed, close Steam completely (including tray icon)
- Reopen DualShock Calibration GUI โ Error 1 should be resolved
Close Steam after updating
